President Donald Trump cheered Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones early Friday, praising him for requiring his players to stand up during the national anthem.
“Way to go Jerry. This is what the league should do!” the president declared in a tweet.
On Wednesday, Jones described his team’s policy.
“As far as the Dallas Cowboys, you know where I stand, the team knows where I stand. Our policy is you stand during the anthem, toe on the line,” he said.
But he also took a swipe at Trump, calling the president’s interference in NFL matters “unprecedented.”
“[Trump’s] interest in what we’re doing is problematic, from my chair, and I would say in general the owners’ chair,” Jones said Wednesday, according to The Washington Post.
“It’s unprecedented, if you really think about it. But like the very game itself, that’s the way it is and we’ll deal with it,” he said. “We feel strongly about how we deal with it and we’ll do so accordingly, but, yes, I, like everybody, would like for it to go away.”
The NFL recently announced it had frozen its new policy requiring players on the field to stand during the anthem, after the NFL Players Association filed a grievance about the policy.
In May, the NFL announced that players would face fines if they did not stand for the anthem and gave them the option of remaining in the locker room while the anthem is played.
Previously, the policy said only that players “should” stand.
