While plenty of big names have already been dealt in the days and weeks leading up Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver trade deadline, even more players will find themselves in new uniforms when the dust settles.
It seemed like a pipe dream days ago, and likely remains just that, but reports emerged Monday night that the Washington Nationals are making outfielder Bryce Harper available. Will one of baseball's brightest stars be on the move Tuesday?
Here's a look at Harper and some of the other top players who could be traded Tuesday:
Bryce Harper, Nationals – Is this really going to happen? Nope.
Chris Archer, Rays – Probably the top starter who could be available Tuesday, the 29-year-old righty has an extremely team-friendly deal – under control through 2021 at an average value of less than $10 million a year. Archer hasn’t pitched like an ace the past few years, but he’s reliable and should command a big return.
J.T. Realmuto, Marlins – The catcher survived Miami’s offseason purge, and could now fetch a pretty penny. He has an .887 OPS and is on track to shatter his career-highs in home runs and RBI. Plenty of contenders need a catcher, and Realmuto is under team control through 2020. If the Nationals decide that they’re committed to winning this year, Realmuto is a great option.
Zack Wheeler, Mets – The 28-year-old has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets this season, and appears to finally be rounding back into form after missing 2015 and 2016 following Tommy John surgery. Would be a fine addition for a contender that needs to bolster its rotation, like the Brewers, Braves or Phillies.
Adam Jones, Orioles – A free agent at the end of the season, Jones can veto any trade. The 32-year-old only has a .747 OPS, but would be a great piece for any contender who wants to upgrade its offense. However, Orioles executive Dan Duquette has said he believes that Jones will “be an Oriole on Wednesday.”
