France look solid in shutout win over Uruguay

Final score: France 2-0 Uruguay

These teams created the same number of open play chances, but goalkeeping and set pieces were the difference. On one end, Hugo Lloris was immaculate. On the other, Fernando Muslera made a huge error. Uruguay’s also not great at play from behind, and looked a bit stunned after Raphael Varane’s opener.

Fans will be left wondering what could have been if Edinson Cavani was fit to play. Uruguay’s been highly dependent on Suarez and Cavani to create goals by themselves in this tournament. Cavani’s replacement, Cristhian Stuani, was poor in relief.

France now await the winner of Belgium-Brazil, which should give them the stiffest test they’ve faced in this tournament. Argentina and Uruguay were no pushovers, but it’s probably about to get a lot harder.

GOAL Antoine Griezmann! France 2-0 Uruguay

This will be Griezmann’s goal on the box score, but effectively, it’s a Fernando Muslera own goal. The Uruguay keeper turned what should have been a routine punch into an absolute howler, gifting France a second goal.

Halftime score: France 1-0 Uruguay

This has been a physical match, with the ref letting a lot of dirty play go. Unsurprisingly, the best chances for both teams have come from free kicks. France has been on top for most of the first half, but Uruguay look perfectly capable of getting back into the game — they actually have one more shot than Les Bleus.

44’ — What a save by Lloris!

Martin Caceres can’t believe he didn’t score, and even Hugo Lloris’ teammates don’t know how he got to this one. Diego Godin was so stunned that he missed an easy rebound.

GOAL Raphael Varane! France 1-0 Uruguay

With all of the fouling in this game, it shouldn’t be surprising that the opening goal came from a dead ball situation, and what a set piece this was. Antoine Griezmann got the Uruguay defense out of position with a stutter-step, then delivered a pretty ball towards the head of Varane. The Real Madrid defender directed a perfect 12-yard header into the back of the net, and Les Bleus have a lead to defend.

Ew.

15’ — Mbappe, why?

With all the time and space in the world, Kylian Mbappe could have let this fall to his foot and passed it into the net. Instead he tried... whatever this header is. Ouch.

Both Uruguay and France have kept 10 players the same from their Round of 16 victories, with one enforced change apiece. Les Bleus are without the suspended Blaise Matuidi, and have introduced Corentin Tolisso in his place. Edinson Cavani is out injured for Uruguay, so Cristhian Stuani will play up top. If you’re only familiar with Stuani from his Middlesbrough days, you might be surprised to learn that he scored 21 goals in La Liga this season.

Antoine Griezmann busts out Fortnite goal celebration at the World Cup

France star Antoine Griezmann busted out a Fortnite celebration after scoring against Argentina in the World Cup on Saturday, and I’m sure it looked like complete nonsense to anyone who’s never played the game.

Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez play a 2-man game across 100 yards of the field

When I say “one-two exchange,” what pops into your head? It’s a quick back-and-forth in a tight space, right? It covers a small piece of ground. Tap-tap-tap. Well, that’s the normal way to play a one-two. Here’s the Uruguay way: Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez doing it across the entire width of the field for a sensational goal against Portugal.
