The Jets have a prominent group of decision makers in Los Angeles on Wednesday for USC quarterback Sam Darnold's pro day.
That group includes head coach Todd Bowles, general manager Mike Maccagnan, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, and player personnel director Brian Heimerdinger (Maccagnan's right-hand man), according to ESPN.
The Jets just traded up from sixth to third, in a deal with the Colts, in order to select one of the top four quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Jets sent three second-round picks (including two this year) to the Colts, for the ability to move up.
The top four quarterbacks this year are (in some order): Darnold, UCLA's Josh Rosen, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, and Wyoming's Josh Allen.
Darnold is probably considered the top guy in that group right now. His pro day is important because he did not throw at the NFL Scouting Combine. He will do that at his pro day.
Teams send all of their primary decision makers to the Combine, where they watch quarterbacks go through on-field workouts (including throwing). So it makes sense that the Jets would send everybody prominent to Darnold's pro day, since he didn't throw at the Combine.
The Browns pick first overall, and they could use a quarterback, so Darnold might be gone with the first pick. The Giants, picking second, also could take a quarterback.
While there are no guarantees Darnold will fall to the Jets at No. 3 (presuming the Jets stay there), they obviously need to do their homework on him, just like they're doing their homework on the other three top quarterbacks in this draft.
