The Miami Dolphins have traded for a new starting center and, as a result, will soon release three-time Pro Bowl selection Mike Pouncey.
Miami acquired Daniel Kilgore from the San Francisco 49ers after swapping seventh-round picks. Both teams announced the trade.
A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the next move will involve the release of Pouncey. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move was not complete.
The 49ers had just signed Kilgore, 30, to a three-year, $11.78 million deal that featured $4.83 in guaranteed money on Feb. 14. But this week, they inked former New York Giants center Weston Richburg to a five-year, $47.5 million deal that included a $9.3 million signing bonus.
Kilgore, who had spent his entire seven-year career with San Francisco, then became expendable, and the Dolphins found themselves in need of a center.
Pouncey had requested a release, per multiple reports, instead of agreeing to a pay cut to remain with the salary-cap-strapped Dolphins. His release will save the team $7 million.
