Michigan's Maurice Hurst, a possible first-round pick, diagnosed with heart condition

INDIANAPOLIS -- Maurice Hurst arrived at the combine as one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the country. He'll leave facing major questions about the future of his career.

The former Michigan star was diagnosed with a heart condition during the medical testing here at the NFL combine, according to ESPN. The severity of the condition is not yet known, nor whether it could impact or imperil his career. He has pulled out of the rest of the events and is expected to undergo further testing in the coming days.

Hurst was expected to take questions from reporters Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Convention Center. It's unclear whether that will still occur.

The diagnosis is a blow for Hurst, who bloomed into one of the country's top interior defensive lineman at Michigan. He was an All-American last season, and according to ProFootballFocus, the best overall player in the country. He was  expected to be one of the first tackles taken in the draft, along with Washington's Vita Vea and Alabama's Da'Ron Payne.

The Detroit Lions, sitting at 20th overall with major needs on the interior of their new defense, were one possible landing spot for him.

"In today's NFL, you've got to get after the quarterback and be disruptive," ESPN analyst Mel Kiper said recently. "That's what Maurice Hurst is."

He weighed in here at 6-foot-1 and 292 pounds, which is undersized for the position. But other undersized defensive tackles have prospered recently in the NFL, including Aaron Donald. Hurst moves really well, too, and could have solidified his stock by showing his athleticism during field drills.

Now it's unclear when, or if, Hurst will get that chance to work out for scouts.

Hurst is the second Big Ten lineman to pull out of the combine for health reasons, following Ohio State center Billy Price
