ORLANDO -- John Mara is tired of answering questions about Odell Beckham Jr., but is the Giants owner tired enough to move on from the team's biggest star?
That's the million dollar question. Or the $100 million question ... if indeed Beckham wants to negotiate a five-year contract worth $20 million per year as the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
So is a contract extension still in his future?
"I think at some point," Mara said Sunday at the NFL owners meetings, "but who knows?"
Not exactly a ringing endoresement.
It's been three straight weekends of non-football-related headlines involving Beckham, who is playing on the final season of his rookie contract at $8.5 million in 2018.
Trade Odell Beckham Jr.? Can the Giants get ANY fair value?
First came the video of him in bed with a woman later identified as an Instagram model and what looked like drugs in a luxurious Paris hotel room. The woman said Beckham did not do drugs.
"I don't know what was in that video exactly," Mara said. "I'm tired of answering questions about Odell's behavior and what the latest incident is. He knows what we expect of him and now it's up to him. I still he will be able to show us what we expect of him."
Next came a report with video from BlackSportsOnline.com that Beckham was in a nightclub in Atlanta when a fight broke out. The website later recanted the story after Beckham's representatives claimed it was a look-alike in the video.
And most recently was a $15 million lawsuit filed by a man who says he was beat up by Beckham's hired security. Beckham released a statement through his attorney calling the suit "frivolous" and accusing the man of a "shakedown attempt.
All of it comes against the backdrop of Beckham's contract extension negotiations, which have dragged on for more than a year.
And yet Mara has not spoken to Beckham since the latest string of incidents began. Giants coach Pat Shurmur met with Beckham last week in California.
Mara, who has committed in the past to re-signing Beckham, had not been heard from since Jan. 26, when the Giants introduced Shurmur. His message then was he wanted his new coach to quickly build a relationship with Beckham around the tenor of "what it is we're looking for from a guy who plays for the New York Giants" before continuing his extension talks.
Even if you paint a picture of Beckham as innocent or taken advantage of his celebrity in the last two stories -- as some Giants fans have -- Beckham's presence in the celebrity gossip news is not what the Giants have in mind for the face of their franchise.
