Aaron Rodgers won’t return to game action for the New York Jets this season, but the team still activated the quarterback from injured reserve Wednesday as part of his rehab, coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday.
The Jets faced a Wednesday deadline to activate Rodgers, who is recovering from an Achilles tear. Rodgers will take up a roster spot, but the move allows him to practice.
Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday that he could be 100 percent in three or four weeks, but he’s not there yet. Rodgers added that he’d push to play if he was 100 percent.
“The whole time it’s been hoping that we’re still in it because it’s unrealistic to think I’d be 100 percent at any point in the regular season,” Rodgers said of the possibility of the Jets going to the playoffs. The team was eliminated from playoff contention following their Week 15 shutout loss to the Miami Dolphins.
When asked if next season would be his last in the league, Rodgers said, “I don’t think next year will be my last year.”
“I feel good about where I’m at now to at least there would have been a conversation about it,” Rodgers said. “Now without a timetable to come back, obviously we can be as smart as we need to be.”
Rodgers, who turned 40 on Dec. 2, did say Tuesday he didn’t think next season would be his last and that he can be effective into his 40s.
“I think he’s going to play until his wheels fall off,” Saleh said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Jets are unsure if Zach Wilson, who is still in concussion protocol, will start Christmas Eve against the Washington Commanders. Saleh said Wednesday that “I’m not closing the door” on Wilson playing Sunday.
Saleh previously announced that Trevor Siemian will start against Washington if Wilson does not clear concussion protocol. Siemian has played in two games for New York this season and recorded 176 passing yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
What’s next for the Jets?
Ultimately, this always felt like where it was going to land once the Jets were eliminated from the playoffs. As long as they even had a minuscule mathematical chance of making it there, maybe Rodgers would’ve made a comeback — especially because of the story that would be told about his remarkable, unprecedented comeback from Achilles surgery. But he just picked the wrong team to bank on keeping them alive.
New York’s season has been a disaster ever since a surprising win against the Philadelphia Eagles brought it to 4-3. The Jets have won one game since, and the 30-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins was the official end to their postseason hopes.
Now the question will be whether Saleh can keep things together enough over these last three games to survive until next year, which he should with Rodgers’ endorsement — but not if the locker room turns on him.
