Scottie Scheffler has work to do. After leading by two entering the 2023 Tour Championship -- based on the staggered afforded to him based on the FedEx Cup standings -- he now trails by one entering Round 2 at East Lake. The No. 1 player in the world is looking up at Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa and Keegan Bradley, all of whom are now at 10 under after Thursday's first round.
The good news for Scheffler is that he had some shots with which he could play. The bad news is that he made his first triple bogey of the year on Thursday and now has a lot of company at the top. The next few days are going to be incredibly interesting, especially with $18 million on the table for first place and a ball-striker (Scheffler) who has not won as much as his tee-to-green numbers would suggest. Will he rebound from a poor first day, or will somebody (probably Viktor Hovland) take advantage of the moment and win the FedEx Cup Playoffs?
The other storyline to watch Friday is Rory McIlroy's back. He labored around East Lake on Thursday as he deals with muscle spasms. McIlroy played decently given the circumstances (even par on the day), but he may not have a chance to win the tournament unless his back improves in the second round and beyond.
