While they’ve been able to hang around in the Wild Card race, the St. Louis Cardinals have done it while missing their ace, Jack Flaherty, for a big chunk of the season with an oblique injury.
The good news for the Cardinals is that Flaherty returned two starts ago, and pitched quite well. The bad news is that tonight, not only was he getting rocked by the Tigers, he lasted only two innings and change before leaving with the trainer:

Flaherty’s velocity was way down after the first inning, with some of his typically-95-mph fastballs showing up solidly under 90 mph. Yikes.
Jack Flaherty's velocity looked fine in the first and then starter to fall off a cliff. Not great signs.

And adding to the yikes is the area of concern:
RHP Jack Flaherty was removed from tonight's game due to right shoulder tightness.

To be sure, it could be something minor. But when a guy is only just barely coming off a separate injury, sees his velocity take a nosedive mid-start, and the area being discussed is the shoulder? It’s a big concern. Given Jack Flaherty’s importance to the Cardinals not only this year but also next year and beyond, he’s a guy we tend to track pretty closely (even if the Cubs are out of this year’s race).
