The New York Giants had a scare at the end of their joint practice with the New England Patriots, as cornerback Adoree' Jackson went down with an ankle sprain. Jackson was taken off on a cart at the conclusion of the practice and is dealing with significant swelling in the ankle, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Jackson will have tests to determine the severity of the sprain, putting his status for the season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 12 up in the air. New York is cautiously optimistic Jackson won't miss significant time, per USA Today's Art Stapleton.
Jackson was able to walk off the field, but the Giants will need to take every precaution for an injury that could linger throughout the season. Good news for the Giants and Jackson -- both have over two weeks to prepare for the opener.
One of the top free agent signings by the Giants, Jackson signed a three-year, $39 million deal to start at cornerback opposite James Bradberry. Injuries have limited Jackson to just 14 games over the last two seasons, including just three last year with a knee injury that lingered throughout the season.
Jackson finished with just 12 tackles in 154 snaps in 2020, struggling in coverage as the knee injury clearly bothered him. The Giants were banking on a healthy Jackson to help out a defense that finished 16th in pass yards allowed last year.
The injury doesn't appear serious, but New York is crossing its fingers until the test results come in.
