"Jimmy is here to stay. He's our guy this year," one 49ers source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Keeping Garoppolo for at least another season might make sense, even after San Francisco lands one of the top quarterback prospects in this year's draft class. The team can afford it after clearing some salary-cap space. Should the 49ers land a Trey Lance or Justin Fields, the young quarterback could sit for a season behind the veteran and use the year to absorb head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.
Then, next offseason, the Niners could reevaluate the situation.
Not everyone believes San Francisco will hold onto Garoppolo, though. General manager John Lynch told NFL Network's Steve Wyche that other teams have inquired. At least one of those teams was the New England Patriots. They reportedly inquired about a potential reunion with Garoppolo before free agency and were shut down, being told by the 49ers that Garoppolo wasn't available—at the time.
Of course, the situation has changed.
With the 49ers obviously targeting a quarterback in the first round, Lynch told Wyche that they would "absolutely" entertain offers. Obviously, if a good enough one presented itself, San Francisco's brain trust would at least consider it.
Apparently, no one around the league is really buying that the 49ers are hell-bent on keeping Garoppolo around for the upcoming season."[The] Patriots have shown interest in acquiring Garoppolo," wrote Jeff Howe of The Athletic (h/t to Marcus White of NBC Sports), "and other teams believe the 2014 second-rounder is available or at least will become available once the Niners stop bluffing. The 49ers-Dolphins trade will lead to teams continuing to check on Garoppolo's availability. ... Will [the Patriots] be willing to offer more for Garoppolo to entice the 49ers to pull the trigger? They were planning to monitor Garoppolo's availability either way."
Wyche said on Friday that he could envision a scenario in which the 49ers trade Garoppolo before the draft and head into the 2021 season with a rookie under center.
"[Lynch has] gotten several calls on [Garoppolo]," Wyche told Keiana Martin of 49ers.com. "So, if they get the compensation that they think is fair, I could see Jimmy Garoppolo being moved before the draft and the Niners rocking with a rookie QB this year."

Jimmy Garoppolo remains in the San Francisco 49ers' plans for at least the upcoming season. The team was part of a draft-altering trade that moved it up from No. 12 overall to the No. 3 pick. It's clear that San Francisco is targeting a quarterback with the move. It could mean the 49ers are comfortable drafting one and then having him sit behind Garoppolo for at least a season while he learns the offense. NFL Network's Steve Wyche spoke with general manager John Lynch at BYU's pro day today to get some insight into San Francisco's plans now that they are situated to select one of the top quarterback prospects in next month's draft. Coincidentally, Lynch got a good look at former BYU quarterback Zack Wilson today. However, he is expected to be selected No. 2

NFL teams had sole negotiating right with their impending free agents until 9 a.m. PT (noon ET). Now, player representatives are free to speak with other teams about their clients. However, contracts can't be finalized and signed until Wednesday. The 49ers reportedly have offers
Jim Trotter discusses Jimmy Garoppolo's future; Steve Wyche suggests a 49ers backup option

Last month, general manager John Lynch sounded confident that Jimmy Garoppolo would be his starting quarterback in September. The New England Patriots reportedly inquired about Garoppolo before signing Cam Newton this past week and were told by the San Francisco 49ers that their quarterback was not available right now. Garoppolo is the 49ers' starting quarterback, and that will only change if a better option presents itself, as is the case with any position on the roster. Andrew Siciliano recently asked Jim Trotter on NFL Network if Jimmy
49ers' Kyle Juszczyk feels Jimmy Garoppolo will use scrutiny as motivation

Jimmy Garoppolo has started in a Super Bowl. His record is 24-9 as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers—including the playoffs. Yet, no matter how many times the team says Garoppolo is expected to be the quarterback in 2021, there remains uncertainty surrounding his future. Garoppolo missing 23 games over the past three seasons may have something to do with that. He missed 13 games in 2018 after suffering an ACL injury. The quarterback missed 10 last season due to ankle injuries. He has missed nearly as many games with the 49ers as he has won, which has led to many questioning his durability. Kyle Juszczyk, fresh off re-signing with the 49ers, joined SiriusXM on Tuesday and was asked about his quarterback and the scrutiny he has endured. It's
