Steve Cohen responds to 'cancel culture' tweet after Mets' Jared Porter firing - New York Post

Mets owner Steve Cohen didn’t stop at his Twitter statement announcing the firing of GM Jared Porter for reportedly sending a stream of inappropriate texts to a female reporter in 2016.

Cohen elaborated on the social media platform Tuesday when one user asked him: “Caving to cancel culture is abhorrent, now that [Porter’s] life has been ruined, what is his path to redemption Mr. Cohen?”

“I have no idea. I have an organization of 400 employees that matter more than any one individual,” Cohen replied. “No action would [have] set a poor example to the culture I’m trying to build.”

Earlier Tuesday, Cohen had announced the firing by tweeting: “We have terminated Jared Porter this morning. In my initial press conference I spoke about the importance of integrity and I meant it. There should be zero tolerance for this type of behavior.”

Cohen dealt with his own “Me Too” allegations at his Point72 Asset Management firm before he was approved as the Mets’ new owner in October. Multiple female former employees of the Connecticut-based hedge fund filed discrimination and misogyny complaints last year with the state’s Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. Those allegations sparked concern by some MLB owners in approving Cohen’s $2.4 billion purchase of the franchise, The Post reported in August.
