The Bears are in the heat of the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes, according to NFL insider Albert Breer.
In a Periscope on Saturday, Breer reported the Bears are one of seven teams "solidly in" on trade talks for the longtime Lions quarterback, adding interest in Stafford has been strong over the past week.
The Washington Football Team, Panthers, Patriots, Colts, 49ers and Rams are the other teams involved, according to Breer. He added he thinks Stafford would like to go to California but is "not sure" whether the 32-year-old will wind up with the 49ers or Rams.
"I think where he'd prefer to go might not be the best offer the Lions get for him," Breer said.
According to Breer, Detroit has been talking trades for their quarterback at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. this week and would like to move him before the Super Bowl. The return could be a first-round pick or a first-round pick and more, Breer said.
Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick by Detroit in 2009, and the Lions mutually agreed to part ways this offseason after 11 seasons together. He's under contract for two more seasons, with cap hits of $20 million in 2021 and $23 million in 2022.
