The Mets fired GM Jared Porter on Tuesday morning after a sexting scandal was brought to light.
“We have terminated Jared Porter this morning,” owner Steve Cohen tweeted. “In my initial press conference I spoke about the importance of integrity and I meant it. There should be zero tolerance for this type of behavior.”
Porter, who was hired by Mets team president Sandy Alderson this offseason, sent the texts to a foreign female reporter in 2016 when he was running the Cubs scouting department.
The texts included a photo of a bulge in Porter’s pants while he was laying in bed and an erect penis. At one point Porter sent 62 consecutive texts to the reporter without a response.
“The more explicit ones are not of me. Those are like, kinda like joke-stock images,” Porter told ESPN after acknowledging sending the texts.
Alderson and the Mets released a statement on Monday night in the wake of the ESPN.com report.
“I have spoken directly with Jared Porter regarding events that took place in 2016 of which we were made aware tonight for the first time,” Alderson said in the statement. “Jared has acknowledged to me his serious error in judgement, has taken responsibility for his conduct, has expressed remorse and has previously apologized for his actions.
“The Mets take these matters seriously, expect professional and ethical behavior from all of our employees and certainly do not condone the conduct described. … We will follow up as we review the facts regarding this serious issue.”
Cohen then acted swiftly using Twitter to announce the firing of the 41-year-old general manager.
