The Giants have been hit with the coronavirus.
Guard Will Hernandez will be placed on the COVID-19 reserve list, The Post has learned. The Giants found out late Wednesday he tested positive. He was immediately isolated and the contact tracing process was started.
A total of eight Giants players and two coaches — outside linebackers coach Bret Bielema and defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson — are now in quarantine, four days before the team is scheduled to face the Buccaneers on “Monday Night Football’’ at MetLife Stadium. All but four of the Giants’ offensive linemen are currently in isolation.
All of the close contacts of Hernandez were identified and were informed they should remain home on Thursday. All players in isolation were at the team facility Thursday morning for their drive-by testing and then returned home.
In addition to Hernandez, the seven players sent home are considered close contacts but not in the “high risk” category. That means they could return to the facility as early as Friday if all goes well with testing.
The Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center will remain open and the rest of the team will follow the normal meeting and practice schedule. The Giants will be on the field Thursday afternoon for practice.
The Giants in a statement said they are working closely with the NFL’s chief medical officer regarding the next protocol steps.
The Las Vegas Raiders last week sent all five of their starting offensive linemen home after right tackle Trent Brown was put on the COVID-19 reserve list. They went through the end of the week with their starting line in isolation before four of them were cleared to play in Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers. Ironically, the Bucs now wait to see if the Giants will have their top offensive linemen for Monday night’s game.
The Raiders-Bucs game was moved out of the “Sunday Night Football’’ window into a 4:05 p.m. kickoff as a precaution.
