The prospect of trading the No. 2 overall pick in NFL Draft 2020 comes with the risk of losing a shot to pick star edge rusher Chase Young. First-year Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera is not taking that lightly.
“If you’re gonna make a trade, and you’re gonna go back, that guy you’re gonna take at that spot has to be able to make the kind of impact you need to validate missing an opportunity to take a player that’s a high-impact guy,” Rivera said during a remote press conference this week. “To me, there’s a few guys on that board that are those kind of players.”
The Redskins have three options at No. 2: 1) Trade down, presumably with a team that needs a quarterback, 2) stay at No. 2 and select 20-year-old Young, or 3) stay at No. 2 and select another quarterback.
“If you’re going to pass up player A, and you go back and you’re going to take player D, player D has to be equal to player A,” Rivera said. “If player A is going to play for you for 10 years, player D may not, and then, did you really get value or just get a whole bunch of picks?
“You’ve got to be able to sit there and say that the next guy that I’m going to take is gonna be that high-impact guy. And that’s what I’m looking for. That’s what I believe we need, is we need a guy that’s going to come in and really change our football team.”
Young, who is likely “Player A” in Rivera’s scenario, is an unquestionable top-two talent in this year’s draft. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive end broke Ohio State’s single-season sack record and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2019. After Young and LSU’s Joe Burrow, who is expected to be taken No. 1 overall by the Bengals, most draft experts see a drop-off. So, the Redskins’ decision will be based on their own evaluations of “Player D” and also what they think of their current QB.
Dwayne Haskins, their 2019 first-round pick, improved after a shaky start to his rookie season, but is far from a lock to be a franchise quarterback. In Haskins’ favor is that he was viewed as the quarterback that owner Daniel Snyder wanted and was taken last season over the reservations of then-head coach Jay Gruden.
Rivera’s opinion of Haskins will be revealed with the Redskins’ decisions both in the draft and with a potential quarterback battle with Kyle Allen, whom the Redskins traded for earlier this offseason.
But if the Redskins don’t see the long-term answer at quarterback on the roster now, they might consider taking Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa over Young with the No. 2 pick.
The prospect of drafting a quarterback in the the first round in back-to-back years may seem outlandish, but the Cardinals did it with Josh Rosen (2018) and Kyler Murray (2019), a move that seems to have worked in their favor.
Tagovailoa’s waning value this offseason due to injury concerns could have an effect on their strategy. If offers for the No. 2 pick aren’t as strong, the Redskins might be even more inclined to stay put.
With Burrow a lock to the Bengals, the Redskins’ decision is the most crucial one in the early portion of draft with significant fallout for the teams below them.
