He would give the Eagles the best defensive line in the NFL. Combining Ngakoue with Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett on the edges, as well as Fletcher Cox, a healthy Malik Jackson and new addition Javon Hargrave in the middle, the Birds would have their best pass rush since the Buddy Ryan days of Reggie, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown and Mike Pitts. It would cover up deficiencies elsewhere in the defense. If the Eagles are overwhelming offensive lines and opposing quarterbacks with their pass rush, it would make improving at safety and linebacker less important, allowing the Birds to potentially focus on needs on the offensive side of the ball.

Pryor is a backup only, in my view, and maybe only at guard. His size and power are nice, but if he were to have to start multiple games, opposing defensive coordinators would look to put him in situations where he was forced to try to handle speed, and I don’t think that would go well.

Analysis: Arcega-Whiteside finished 29th among rookies in receiving yards with 169, unable to achieve the instant success multiple players from his draft class enjoyed. That came as a bit of a surprise given the ability he had shown at Stanford and during the preseason. Asked to learn all three receiver positions, he suffered from information overload. With better coaching and a little more seasoning, Arcega-Whiteside has the potential to blossom in Year 2. But with the Eagles looking to bolster the position in the draft, he’s going to have to earn his snaps in 2020. Rating: Has a lot to prove.
2020 NFL Draft prospect profile: Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU - Big Blue View
Justin Jefferson is a scheme-versatile receiving prospect who thrived as a “big slot” in a spread offense, but has the traits to play a variety of alignments in a variety of offensive schemes. He will likely be best in an offense based on West Coast or spread principles. Jefferson has a varied route tree and is a savvy route runner, allowing an offense to use his routes as weapons. An offense that uses route combinations to create defensive conflicts would give Jefferson a chance to use his route running to its fullest advantage, as well as create opportunities to be a playmaker with the ball in his hands. That being said, he should also be used in vertical concepts as well, as his use of subtle head, shoulder, and hip fakes, as well as tempo changes, make it difficult for defensive backs to stay in phase. Likewise, his deceptive long speed has a tendency to take cornerbacks by surprise, eating up cushions or negating recovery speed. Teams might want to try and manufacture free releases for Jefferson early in his career, at least until he shows the ability to consistently deal with NFL size and speed in press situations. All told, Jefferson has a well-rounded game that should appeal to a wide variety of teams.

When the Eagles cut ties with Peters, they issued a statement saying among other things: “We will remain in communication as each side continues to evaluate its options in free agency.” So what are the chances they bring him back? Small. The Eagles traded up to draft Andre Dillard last year for a reason. If they truly wanted Peters to play left tackle in 2020, they never would have let him go in the first place. Would Peters come back as a backup? The only backup tackle the Eagles have at this point is Jordan Mailata, who has never played a snap in a meaningful football game on any level. Guard Matt Pryor might get a look outside. Would Peters come back as a sub if he can’t get a job elsewhere?

In six seasons with the Eagles, he averaged 11.7 yards per return. He led the NFL in punt return average in 2014, which was his first season with the Eagles, and averaged eight yards or better seven times in the decade.

A player can handle a phone call or video chat differently than an in-person discussion, and that can be dangerous for a scout looking to pound the table for a prospect. “Pro days are very, very valuable,” the scout said. “You can spend time with players during their pro day and really get a vibe of a kid.” Not being able to get updated medical histories from players is also an issue for not only the scouting staffs but the top decision-makers as well. “You’re going to probably have to work off a smaller board unless you feel comfortable rolling the dice and picking a player that you don’t have a physical on,” the personnel executive said.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of a handful of teams with a new coaching staff coming in this season. Coincidentally, two of the other NFC East teams, Washington and New York, also have new coaching staffs. With the possibility increasing each day that OTAs and minicamps are going to be canceled due to the coronavirus, it’s going to hurt a lot of these new coaches and coordinators trying to implement their new schemes and verbiage on offense and defense. One thing that works in the favor of head coach Mike McCarthy is that he was able to keep the offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to call the plays this season. Having Moore gives McCarthy the ability to continue to use the verbiage and run the same plays from last season, leaving McCarthy to only worry about any new offensive free agents and rookies coming in to learn the offense. The same cannot be said for defensive coordinator Mike Nolan who is planning on installing a new defensive scheme for the Cowboys

This grinds my gears; selling Ruggs’ 4.27-second 40-yard dash as some sort of negative is lazy. While there is validity that speed only matters if it can be controlled, Ruggs’ game tape clearly showcases that he knows how to remain balanced and his speed as a weapon. John Ross is the poster boy for why someone shouldn’t fall in love with a receiver just because he is fast. Ross doesn’t control his speed well and it leads to sloppy routes that aren’t challenging to mirror because there is very little deception. Despite clocking a record 4.22 40-yard dash, Ross isn’t a meaningful NFL receiver because he doesn’t know how to make his speed matter. There are other dynamics to Ross’ game like his injury history, inconsistent hands and ball skills that have led to his demise; lumping Ruggs with Ross is short-sighted. The two have very little in common aside from their historic 40-yard dash times.
