The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly considering trading both of their first-round picks as they look to recoup picks in the middle of this week's NFL draft.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the 49ers have been fielding calls for the selections. They have no picks in Rounds 2-4 and are not currently slated to pick again until No. 156 overall after the No. 31 selection. The 49ers also have pick No. 13 after trading DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts.
San Francisco owes its second-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs (Dee Ford) and its third- and fourth-rounders to the Denver Broncos (Emmanuel Sanders). The Sanders trade in particular stands out as a loss, with the wideout leaving the 49ers for the New Orleans Saints in free agency after playing only 10 regular-season games in San Francisco.
"You never stay the same," general manager John Lynch told reporters at the draft combine. "You're either getting better or getting worse. We're into getting better. It becomes trickier with less draft equity and things of that nature, but we've got a lot of good players that are part of us moving forward as well."
The 49ers' best bet at No. 13 is a quarterback, either Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa, falling out of the top 10. At that point, some quarterback-needy team in the 20s—Jacksonville at No. 20, perhaps—may want to trade up to avoid being leapfrogged for the value. The Jaguars would likely have to give up their third-round pick (No. 73 overall) in this scenario, according to both the classic and modern draft value charts.
That said, don't be surprised if Lynch is tempted to remain at No. 13—particularly if the 49ers' top evaluated receiver is on the board. At least one of Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs and CeeDee Lamb is certain to be available at No. 13. All three would, on paper, fill a desperate need for a bona fide No. 1 wideout. It's unlikely that any of the three would be available in the 20s, meaning the 49ers would have to settle for a Justin Jefferson or Tee Higgins.
This is considered one of the best wide receiver drafts in recent memory, but there is still a chasm between the top three and the remainder of the class. With questions being asked about Jimmy Garoppolo's viability as a franchise quarterback, sticking at No. 13 and taking a wideout is worth exploring.
