Besides that, a lot of other rumors are flying on the likes of Madison Bumgarner, Yasiel Puig and Nicholas Castellanos, among others. Meantime, the Angels sidetracked from their pursuit of Cole by adding a rotation piece in a 4-for-1 trade.

2019 stats: Chicago Cubs, 7-7, 3.81 ERA, 27 starts, 141.2 IP, 56 BB, 143 K.

The latest: The Braves pulled a surprise signing Hamels to a one-year, $18-million contract on Wednesday because their competition for the four-time All-Star included the Phillies. Hamels was with the Phillies for his first 9 1/2 seasons, he was the World Series MVP when the Phils won it all in 2008 and he loves Philadelphia. Then why pick the Braves? “Phillies had made an initial offer to Hamels and were just beginning talks, but when Braves jumped in and hit Cole’s goal, that decided things,” Jeff Passan of ESPN.com tweeted. The Braves winning the NL East two years in a row also played a factor in Hamels’ decision, as did joining a rotation that already included four good young starters - righties Mike Soroka and Mike Foltnewicz, and lefties Max Fried and Sean Newcomb. “When it came down to it, I wanted to play on a contender,” Hamels said. “I was very familiar with the Braves. I’ve watched them in the postseason and I’ve seen what they’ve been able to create. I’ve always been following them in hopes of maybe being able to pitch with some of those guys, because they have such good young talent. I know at my stage of my career what I could provide could be beneficial.”

Pineda returned from August 2017 Tommy John surgery this year and fared well before being handed a 60-game suspension in September for testing positive to a banned substance.
