'Lock Him Up': Donald Trump's Face Drops As He Notices Crowd Are Booing at World Series - Newsweek

Donald Trump's face dropped at Game 5 of the World Series last night when he realised that he was being booed by baseball fans at the 41,000 capacity stadium.

In the build up to Sunday's match between the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros at the Nationals Park stadium in D.C., fans cheered and applauded as players stepped up to their bases. But the atmosphere turned when President Trump appeared on the jumbotron.

The chorus of cheers turned into thundering boos when the commander-in-chief appeared on-screen beside First Lady Melania Trump and a group of Republicans—including Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida.

A clip of the president slowly realising he's not being cheered by fans was shared by documentary filmmaker Arlen Parsa.

But the backlash against Trump from Nationals and Astros fans did not stop at booing. A large section of fans were filmed chanting "lock him up" after the jeering died down, appropriating the "lock her up" chant supporters of the president have directed at his 2016 presidential election rival Hillary Clinton.

The hashtag "#LockHimUp" is top of the U.S. trending charts on Twitter at the time of writing, with thousands of people sharing clips, pictures and memes riffing on the president's appearance at the World Series.

Several areas surrounding Washington, D.C. voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, and the District of Columbia itself voted 90 percent in favour of the Democrat candidate.

Reacting to footage of the widespread jeering, Mrs. Doubtfire screenwriter Randi Mayem Singer tweeted: "This is perfection. You can see Trump as he realizes the crowd is boo'ing him.

"He looks at Melania. She seems to be saying 'just smile and clap until it's over. It may not be as bad as it sounds up here.' Then the crowd starts chanting #LockHimUp."

President Trump did not stay for the entirety of the game, with CNN reporting that he left before the end of the 8th inning.

Donald Trump is not the first president to receive a frosty reception from baseball fans. Fellow Republican and former president George W. Bush was booed by Washington Nationals fans while throwing a pitch at a 2008 game, and booes can be heard in a video of Barack Obama making the same ceremonial pitch in 2014.

The game between the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros ended in a 7-1 loss for the home side, giving the Astros a 3-2 lead going into their sixth game on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
