The Eagles got the first pick, but Sean Payton got the last... - The Athletic

As the kids would say, Sean Payton was in his bag on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, even if the Saints did only score 20 points. He prepared a game plan that was playoff caliber, and some of those plays might have been borrowed from his opponent.

It’s not often you see the Saints run an RPO (Run-Pass-Option), but it looks like they ran one Sunday that featured a pre-snap read for Drew Brees to decide whether he wanted to hand the ball off to Alvin Kamara to run to the right or if he wanted to go for a short screen to Michael Thomas to his left. If the play is indeed a pre-snap read RPO, the premise is simple. Brees reads the number of defenders to each side of both potential plays and determines which one has the highest likelihood of success.

To his left, Terron Armstead and Tre’Quan Smith would be the blockers for Thomas on the screen with what amounts to four defenders to that side. The right side of the line has six defenders to five Saints...
