Dennis Smith Jr. didn't show up.
Ahead of a visit with the Pacers in Indiana on Saturday, the Mavericks got together for practice Friday morning. As SportsDay's Brad Townsend wrote Thursday, the smartest thing Smith could have done is show up to work and compete as though the rest of his NBA career depended on it.
This is the only way Smith and the Mavericks could begin to extricate themselves from the heaping mess that both sides have allowed to accumulate around them.
Except he wasn't there, Townsend has confirmed. ESPN first reported the news.
As of Thursday evening, a Mavericks source expressed hope, bordering on optimism, that after discussions with Smith and his agent, Glenn Schwartzman, the franchise and Smith can re-establish a positive working relationship, perhaps as soon as Friday's practice.
A source from Smith's inner circle told The News this week that 21-year-old Smith, while not demanding a trade, would prefer a fresh start on a team on which he would be the primary ball-handler, which no longer is the case in Dallas with the emergence of Luka Doncic.
More to come on the latest developments.
