Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President, Dana White, is a mixed martial arts (MMA) promoter, first and foremost, charged with bringing new and repeat business to the folks who invested $4 billion into his brand of cage fighting.
So, with that in mind, it should not come as a surprise to anyone in the prize-fighting industry to learn that White will make whatever decision he believes is best for the bottom line, regardless of how many feelings get hurt.
You know, like moving an entire pay-per-view (PPV) event from one state to another to accommodate his championship headliner, giving zero fucks about how many paying fans are left holding the proverbial bag.
That’s why ONE Championship import Ben Askren — who already has a contentious history with White and UFC — is so befuddled over Colby Covington’s social media campaign to expose the “Sin City” fight boss for being selfish and unreliable.
Seriously ... where the hell has he been for the last 10 years?
Covington captured the interim title from Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 226, then was asked to unify the straps against Woodley at UFC 228. “Chaos” turned it down, so White sent him to the back of the line and gave Kamaru Usman the spot at UFC 235 in March.
It’s not like Usman was ranked No. 11 and jumped in to steal the title shot. “The Nigerian Nightmare” won season 21 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), then effortlessly captured eight straight wins in the 170-pound weight class.
Nine, if you count this pre-fight press conference.
After all, this is combat sports, and not all the fighting takes place inside the cage.
