UConn says its men's basketball program is under NCAA investigation

The NCAA is investigating Connecticut’s men’s basketball program for potential rules violations, the school confirmed to the New Haven Register by early Friday morning.

“We are working closely with the NCAA enforcement division,” UConn said in a statement provided to that paper. Its report adds:

While the full nature of the inquiry is uncertain, some, if not all, involves areas of recruiting, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

The school adds:

“Based on our own, NCAA-mandated internal review following allegations directed at men’s basketball programs last fall, we had already retained [law firm] Lightfoot, Franklin and White to assist us in a review of our men’s basketball program,” the school said in its statement. “We will continue to work with them during the NCAA inquiry.”

The Huskies, coached by former UConn and NBA player Kevin Ollie, are having a mediocre season. They’re 11-9 and 4-3 in the AAC, the conference they joined in 2013. Terrible offense has dogged this year’s team, sitting 219th in adjusted efficiency.

UConn won the national championship in 2010-11 and 2013-14, the latter title coming in Ollie’s second year after succeeding Jim Calhoun. The Huskies have been underwhelming every year they haven’t won the national title. This year could mark their fourth missed NCAA tournament in an eight-year run that includes two titles.
