How No. 1 teams have fared in the first iteration of the CFP rankings, historically: Buckeye Breakfast - cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State finds itself at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings after the first iteration, and at 8-0, have just four games left to finish a perfect season.

The top five of the rankings, though, are full of undefeated teams that will have a chance to bolster their resumes to get to, or better than the level of Ohio State’s current level. With No. 3 Michigan on the schedule, the Buckeyes have the chance to end the season with, at the time of the game, three Top 10 wins.

But the No. 1 ranking, especially in October, means little with the most important part of the schedule still to come. Still, it’s worth a look to see how past No. 1 teams in the first College Football Playoff have finished their seasons. And, notably, their seasons have ended with some big time games being played.

Of the nine previous programs that have held the No. 1 ranking in the College Football Playoff era, six have ended up in the National Championship Game — two have won, four have lost. Only two teams (Mississippi State and Tennessee) have missed out on the College Football Playoff entirely.

Each team that held the initial No. 1 ranking, sans Mississippi State in 2014, has finished with no more than two losses, all of which came after the initial ranking.

YearTeam, record at timeEnd of year recordResult
2014Mississippi State, 7-010-3Loss in Orange Bowl
2015Clemson, 8-014-1Loss in National Championship Game
2016Alabama, 8-014-1Loss in National Championship Game
2017Georgia, 8-013-2Loss in National Championship Game
2018Alabama, 8-014-1Loss in National Championship Game
2019Ohio State, 8-013-1Loss in CFP Semifinals
2020Alabama, 7-013-0National Champions
2021Georgia, 8-014-1National Champions
2022Tennessee, 8-011-2Win in Orange Bowl

So what does it all mean? Frankly, not a ton.

Each year is so different from one another that it’s impossible to compare years and teams to one another. Perhaps the best team of the College Football Playoff era, 2019 LSU, wasn’t ranked as the No. 1 seed when the playoff rankings were first released. Each year,

But, history has proven that it does at least put the No. 1 team in decent shape to get to the College Football Playoff. Clearly, part of that was due to the fact that the best teams typically assert themselves early in the season. The end results, though, are what they are.

Ohio State holds “Family Halloween”

Ohio State held a “Family Halloween” where various players held Q&A sessions with kids of Ohio State coaches.

The video, which can be seen here, included quarterback Kyle McCord, running back Dallan Hayden and tight end Cade Stover. It detailed their favorite NFL teams, favorite Halloween candy and favorite Halloween movies.

And, as Stover said in the video, he has no idea what a “Swiftie” is.
