Shemy Schembechler, the son of legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler and the program’s newly hired assistant director of recruiting, resigned Saturday after drawing scrutiny for offensive social media posts that appeared on his Twitter feed.
Shemy, a longtime NFL scout most recently with the Raiders, liked political posts containing offensive and racist content. His Twitter account has since been deactivated.
“Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football,” coach Jim Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel said in a joint statement. “We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the University’s and Athletic Department’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.”
Shemy’s resignation is the latest controversy related to the legacy of Bo Schembechler, who led the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten championships as coach from 1969 to 1989. Shemy and other members of the Schembechler family defended Bo, who died in 2006, when sexual abuse allegations surfaced involving Robert Anderson, a longtime team doctor.
Michigan’s football facility bears the Schembechler name and a statue of Bo Schembechler stands outside.
Shemy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
