As shocking as the Fernando Tatis Jr. PED news was, I am wondering if some of the frank and frustrated comments thereafter are not shocking. Like, after the motorcycle thing in the offseason, is there some level of are-you-kidding-me-with-this-guy in the organization? That’s how some of it reads to me, anyway.
Judge for yourself, and then ponder how awkward things are going to be in the years ahead – the many, many years ahead – as Tatis tries to get re-settled and play out the next 12 years of his contract.
From team president A.J. Preller, via the San Diego Union-Tribune:
“It’s very disappointing,” Preller said. “He’s somebody that from the organization’s standpoint we’ve invested time and money into. When he’s on the field, he’s a difference maker. You have to learn from the situations. We were hoping that from the offseason to now that there would be some maturity, and obviously with the news today, it’s more of a pattern and it’s something that we’ve got to dig a bit more into …. “
Preller said Friday the organization would “revisit” some of the details from Tatis’ offseason.
“We’ll start digging into the shoulder and wrist; we’ll look a little bit more into that now, because we’ll have some more time to have some conversations there,” Preller said. “I think what we need to get to is a point in time where we trust. Over the course of the last six or seven months, I think that’s been something that we haven’t really been able to have there.
“From our standpoint, obviously he’s a great talent, he’s a guy we have a lot of history with and do believe in. But these things only work when there’s trust both ways. I think that’s going to be something that we’re going to have plenty of conversation and time to talk to Fernando about. That’s something that clearly, if we’re going to have a partnership and a real relationship, we’re going to have to make sure that that’s strong.”
From Manny Machado, via USA Today:
“He hasn’t been part of the team all year. We’ve gotten to this point so far without him. We were waiting for him to get back and hopefully for him to be a spark plug for the team.”
From Mike Clevinger, via The Athletic:
“It’s the second time we’ve been disappointed with him. You hope he grows up and learns from this and learns that it’s about more than just him right now.”
From Joe Musgrove, via The Athletic:

He’s going to learn his lessons or whatnot. But ultimately, I think you got to start showing a little bit of remorse and you got to start showing us that you’re committed to it and you want to be here.”
