Kyler Murray's new contract with the Arizona Cardinals includes an eye-catching addendum: the quarterback will be required to complete at least four hours of "independent study" per game week during the season, NFL Network reported Monday.
"Independent study" entails that Murray will study material provided to him by the team to prepare for the next upcoming game, the contract reportedly reads. Time spent in mandatory team meetings does not count toward the independent study time.
"Player shall receive no credit for Independent Study for any period during which Player does not personally study the provided material in good faith," the contract reportedly says. "For the avoidance of doubt, Player shall not receive any credit for Independent Study with respect to any time period during which any material is displayed or players on an iPad or other electronic device if (a) Player is not personally studying or watching the material while it is being displayed or played or (b) Player is engaged in any other activity that may distract his attention (for example, watching television, playing video games or browsing the internet) while such material is being displayed or played."
A breach of the addendum could result in the contract being defaulted.
Murray, who turns 25 in August, agreed to a five-year extension with the Cardinals through 2028, the team announced on July 21. The deal is worth $230.5 million and includes $160 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network.
His contract negotiations turned public during the offseason when after the Pro Bowl, Murray scrubbed his social media accounts of Cardinals references. Shortly after, the quarterback’s agent released a statement that questioned Arizona’s commitment to winning. Word leaked that the Cardinals might have concerns about Murray’s maturity and leadership.
Murray, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has been a major impact player for Arizona since he arrived at the franchise. He’s thrown for 11,480 yards with 70 touchdowns and 34 interceptions, along with 1,786 rushing yards and 20 rushing TDs.
He’s a two-time Pro Bowl selection and has seen his passer rating improve in each of his first three seasons — 87.4 in 2019, 94.3 in 2020 and 100.6 in 2021.
