CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If Deshaun Watson hasn’t won over all his new Browns teammates yet, he should have it clinched very soon.
The Browns’ new $230 million man is treating his offensive teammates to a trip to the Bahamas this weekend for some on-field work and team bonding, two league sources confirmed for cleveland.com. It was first reported by NFL Reporter Josina Anderson of “The Crew.”
Watson, who’s participating fully in the Browns’ offseason program, will work on getting to know new teammates such as four-time Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper on and off the field.
At the start of the offseason program last month, coach Kevin Stefanski said Watson was acclimating well to the Browns after being acquired in a blockbuster trade March 18 with the Texans.
Browns cornerback Denzel Ward also revealed last month that Watson and Myles Garrett had some team-bonding trips planned for the offense and defense.
The trip will be similar to the “Camp Mayfields” that Baker Mayfield hosted the past couple of years in his hometown of Austin, Texas.
Although Mayfield is still on the Browns roster, it’s unlikely he’ll l make the trip to the Bahamas, a source said. The Browns are still actively trying to trade him, and he’s still also rehabbing his surgically repaired left shoulder.
The other quarterbacks on the roster are Jacoby Brissett, Josh Dobbs, and undrafted rookie Felix Harper.
Watson is also in the midst of giving depositions for some of his 22 pending civil suits by massage therapists accusing him of sexual misconduct. Watson will give two a day in Houston from June 21-23, which is during the Browns’ six-week break between mandatory minicamp June 14-16 and the start of training camp in late July.
Lawyers for Watson and the plaintiffs have agreed not to go to trial from Aug. 1 to March 1 to enable Watson to play the season uninterrupted. The NFL is still conducting its own investigation into Watson’s behavior and has no timetable for when he might be suspended or fined.
The Browns have a relatively soft schedule in the first four games of the season, but NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told cleveland.com that Watson’s possible ban had no bearing on scheduling. Their first four games are at Carolina, at home against the Jets, at home against the Steelers on Thursday Night Football, and at the Falcons.
