No. 4 Illinois is off to a great start in its encore to the top-five road win against Michigan, holding a 41-37 lead at halftime against No. 7 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
Sporting a protective mask for the facial injury that cost him three games, Illinois star guard Ayo Dosunmu has hit the ground running and connected on all five of his first half attempts and is tied for the team lead with 11 points. The Fighting Illini have also gotten a huge boost from Andre Curbelo off the bench, with 11 points, three rebounds, four assists and a steal in the half.
Ohio State has been able to hit enough shots to hang in the game, but Illinois has done a good job of making life difficult for the Buckeyes on the offensive end of the floor. From chasing shooters off the 3-point line to contesting the kind of deep looks that usually power the Ohio State offense, Illinois has so far done a much better job on the defensive end of the floor than in the first meeting this year.
We'll see if Ohio State can start getting some stops in the second half, but if Illinois continues its dominance around the rim and 64.3% field goal percentage it seems likely the Fighting Illini are going to take a big step toward securing a No. 1 seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
