NFL Rumors & Draft News: The Tony Pauline Mailbag (3.10.21)

This week’s installment will cover my 2021 NFL Draft prospect rankings and various questions around 2021 NFL Draft rumors and items from around the league. First, let’s address the butterfly effect of the Eagles’ decision on whether or not Jalen Hurts is the starting quarterback in 2021.

NFL rumors and roster-building plans

Are the Eagles really “all in” on Jalen Hurts or is it just smoke? Also, any idea what connections Philly has to backup quarterbacks?

Several weeks ago during an episode of The Draft Insiders podcast, before Carson Wentz was traded, I mentioned Wentz’s issues were not solely a personality conflict with the coaching staff but the entire front office. Stories are now surfacing that say owner Jeffrey Lurie wants Hurts to be the starter.

As such, we’ll have more on Wednesday’s webcast.

With the Bills picking at 30th overall, where is the best value for them so late in Round 1? Do you think they will be able to address one of their top needs like OL, TE, CB, or pass rusher?

Definitely not tight end.

However, I think there should be solid players at corner, pass rusher, and maybe offensive line.

Any NFL rumors that a quarterback is in play for the Lions in Round 1? Or do they really think Jared Goff is their long-term answer?

There will be a lot of discussion about taking a quarterback if a top passer falls to the Lions in Round 1. As far as Goff being the long-term answer, they will let it play out and see what happens. There’s absolutely no necessity to make that determination now.

2021 NFL Draft news and buzz

How high could Mac Jones realistically go, and what is pushing his recent rise? The NFL rumors seem to have gone from early Day 2 to the end of the first round — and now there’s even talk that he could sneak into the top 10.

I struggle to see him as a top-10 pick and don’t grade him as one. As of now, the only way I envision Mac Jones as a top-10 selection is a team getting scared and moving up to grab him. I think somewhere between picks 11 and 15 are more realistic.

I was a Jones skeptic until I saw him at the Senior Bowl, where he checked off most of the boxes for me. He’s not flashy or overly athletic, but he’s a field general with enough arm strength to start on Sunday.

Why isn’t Oklahoma State wide receiver Tylan Wallace getting more attention from draft analysts? What do you think of Wallace as a player and how he might fit at the next level?

I can’t speak for other analysts, but I liken Tylan Wallace‘s game to Brandon Aiyuk in style and substance. If the knee checks out and he runs well during his pro day, he’s a top-half-of-Round-2 guy.

Why is there no consensus on Daviyon Nixon? He seems like a monster on the interior to me. Any NFL rumors on him — what am I missing that separates him and a guy like Christian Barmore?

Christian Barmore is slightly more athletic and a better pure pass rusher, while Daviyon Nixon is a much better run defender. Indeed, there will always be a variety of opinions on players others feel have limitations rushing the passer.

What am I missing about Jonathan Adams of Arkansas State? I’ve watched several of his games, and I see a tall, rangy WR with good size and speed. He has the ability to high-point the ball. So why isn’t the WR higher on boards?

Have to see how he runs during pro day. He’s supposed to be a mid-4.4-second guy. On the other hand, he really doesn’t play to that speed and his route tree is limited.

I like Adams but like him as a Day 3 selection.
