Jets franchise tag Marcus Maye amid agent tension - New York Post

The Jets’ Marcus Maye contract drama appears over – for now.

Gang Green used the franchise tag on its star safety Monday, The Post’s Brian Costello confirmed. While Jets general manager Joe Douglas has said re-signing Maye was a priority this offseason, contract negotiations started to turn ugly last week when Maye’s agent criticized the organization.

The use of the franchise tag means the 28-year-old Maye would be paid $11 million this season, but not have any long term security. The decision to tag Maye, who would have been eligible for free agency, needed to be made by Tuesday. By doing so, the Jets still have until July 15 to negotiate a long-team deal.

Maye was the Jets’ best player last season with two interceptions, 11 passes defended, two forced fumbles and two sacks and became a leader in the locker room.
