The Detroit Lions have signed former New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill, the team announced on Saturday morning.
Hill will reunite with Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who served as his tight ends coach for the past five years. Over that time, Hill developed into a solid run-blocking tight end who would come up with the occasional catch. His best year as a receiver was in 2019 when he hauled in 25 catches for 226 yards and three touchdowns.
Hill was cut by the Saints earlier in March in a move that saved the team about $2.5 million in much-needed cap space.
Hill’s signing comes just a couple of days after the Lions made a cap-cleaning move of their own, releasing veteran Jesse James after two disappointing seasons in Detroit. The terms of Hill’s deal are not yet known, but his last contract was a three-year, $8.85 million deal with the Saints. Hill will turn 31 this year, so there’s a solid chance he’ll come at a more affordable price.
The Lions are now at a comfortable position at tight end, with T.J. Hockenson and Hunter Bryant rounding up the room. Detroit also signed Hunter Thedford and Alize Mack to future deals earlier this offseason.
