The Bears’ potentially spiraling season now has a signature play.
With 9:11 left in the third quarter of their 26-23 overtime loss to the Saints on Sunday, receiver Javon Wims walked up to Saints safety C.J. Gardner Johnson and punched him twice in the helmet. After spilling out of the ensuing scrum clapping his hands, Wims was ejected from the game and faces a possible suspension from the NFL.
“THAT MAN PUNCH LIKE A FEMALE,” Gardner-Johnson wrote on Instagram.
Video later discovered shows that on the previous Bears possession, Gardner-Johnson ripped Wims’ mouthpiece out and threw it to the ground. According to the NFL Network, Wims told Bears coaches that Gardner-Johnson also spit on him. Regardless, Bears coach Matt Nagy told reporters afterward that the punch was “completely unacceptable.”
“We talked to him and told him that’s not how things go here,” Nagy said of Wims, a seventh-round draft pick in 2018.
“One of Javon’s strengths is character and who he is as a person and he has since apologized but there is no part of that in this game. Again, I still haven’t seen it, but from what I heard it is not good. That’s now how we roll here and we’ll be talking to him.”
The Bears are 5-3 and still in solid position for the postseason. However, Nick Foles does not appear to be the answer at quarterback as calls to bring back Mitch Trubisky as the starter — most notably from Fox analyst Troy Aikman — picked up in the second half.
Foles was able to rally Chicago for 10 points in the final minutes before New Orleans scored on its second possession of overtime for the victory.
