Vikings running back Dalvin Cook exited Sunday’s game against the Seahawks early in the third quarter after pulling up during a run and grabbing his left groin.
It was Cook’s 22nd touch of the night, a swing pass to the flat, but he started hobbling before reaching the sideline where he was knocked out of bounds by Seahawks safety Ryan Neal.
He went to the locker room almost immediately, followed by Vikings trainers. He briefly returned to the game for one play on which Kirk Cousins was intercepted.
Against the Seahawks, the Vikings offense continued to run through Cook, the NFL’s leading rusher entering Week 5. He compiled 21 touches by halftime and had 65 rushing yards and 24 receiving yards before exiting.
While the Vikings built up a 13-0 lead, Cook and backup running back Alexander Mattison combined for 128 of 217 first-half yards.
Cook’s injury marked a momentum shift in the game, as the Vikings punted and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a 19-yard touchdown pass on the next drive. Seattle took a 14-13 lead before Cook’s brief return.
The Vikings “monitor” Cook’s workload, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. But Cook, who played more than only three running backs in the first four games, was a workhorse from the opening kickoff. His 21 touches were a career high for a first half.
“We try to spot him throughout the course of the ballgame,” Zimmer said earlier this week. “When the game’s on the line, we’ve got to get him in there.”
