ESPN suspends NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski after F-bomb email to U.S. senator - NJ.com

The Boston Globe reports ESPN has suspended NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski following his NSFW email sent Friday to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.). According to the Globe, “the terms of the suspension are not yet known.”

The war of words started when Hawley (R-Mo.) trolled the NBA for supporting the Black Lives Matter movement as the league relaxes its rules on jerseys to give players an avenue for social protest.

In making his point, Hawley referenced Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey supporting anti-government protests in Hong Kong with an image that read, “Fight For Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong.”

Morey’s tweet in October came as the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets went to China for exhibition games. China is a big partner with the NBA, and started pulling its support for the league following Morey’s tweet.

According to Hawley’s twitter feed, Wojnarowski responded to the senator’s message objecting to the league’s jersey policy with a short email which got right to the point: “F**k you.”

Upon reflection (and backlash), Wojnarowski later tweeted an apology:

“I was disrespectful and I made a regrettable mistake. I’m sorry for the way I handled myself and I am reaching out immediately to Senator Hawley to apologize directly. I also need to apologize to my ESPN colleagues because I know my actions were unacceptable and should not reflect on any of them.”

As for the NBA, the league approved several social justice messages which can replace players’ names on jerseys when the league resumes play following the coronavirus pandemic on July 30 in Orlando.

Per ESPN’s Marc Spears, the list includes: Black Lives Matter; Say Their Names; Vote; I Can’t Breathe; Justice; Peace; Equality; Freedom; Enough; Power to the People; Justice Now; Say Her Name; Sí Se Puede (Yes We Can); Liberation; See Us; Hear Us; Respect Us; Love Us; Listen; Listen to Us; Stand Up; Ally; Anti-Racist; I Am A Man; Speak Up; How Many More; Group Economics; Education Reform; and Mentor.
