Joe Biden: NFL, MLB seasons ’probably not going to be able to happen’ amid coronavirus pandemic - NJ.com

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee for President, isn’t winning any votes with sports fans these days.

On Tuesday, Biden was asked about sports leagues, specifically the NFL and MLB, trying to play their seasons amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It seems to me that it’s probably not going to be able to happen, based on what the leagues themselves are saying,” Biden said, according to the Washington Post.

To back up his point, Biden referenced the Miami Marlins, who are dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19. “I mean, you have the Marlins saying, ‘We can’t do it.’ So I think they should just follow the science.”

Biden advocated for putting teams in a bubble, much like the NBA, NHL and MLS are doing, indicating leagues will face coronavirus problems unless the are “sequestered in one place.”

The NFL is opening training camp this week and intends to play a full 16-game season in 2020. Major League Baseball shortened its season to 60 games, and it’s possible not all of the clubs will play that many. The Marlins are quarantining through at least Sunday after 17 members of the club tested positive for the coronavirus.

As a result, five clubs were forced to change their schedules on the fly, including the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals.

On Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he believes the COVID-19 outbreak on the Marlins could spell the end of the 2020 season. His warning came during an appearance Tuesday on “Good Morning America.” Per ESPN:

“This could put it in danger,” said Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert. “I don’t believe they need to stop, but we just need to follow this and see what happens with other teams on a day-by-day basis.”
