Almost four years ago, Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to protest against racial violence. Sadly, he became a pariah and the San Francisco 49ers chose to cut ties with him. Four years on, Kaepernick has had the last laugh, as everyone has finally understood why he protested.
Now, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted that he will try and coax teams into signing the free agent. Speaking to ESPN, Goodell confessed that he cannot decide to re-recruit Kaepernick, but he would welcome him back with open arms.
“Well, listen, if he wants to resume his career in the NFL, then obviously it’s going to take a team to make that decision,” Goodell said. “But I welcome that, support a club making that decision and encourage them to do that.”
What if Colin Kaepernick cannot return to the NFL?
Goodell also revealed that if Kaepernick goes unsigned, or chooses his activism duties, he would respect that. However, he also revealed that in the event of the latter, Kaepernick could still have a role with the NFL.
Initially, the NFL tried to stay as far away from social issues as much as possible. Even peaceful protests like taking the knee, were frowned upon. However, Goodell has finally relented, especially in light of the George Floyd incident. He even apologized for the league’s strict stance against protesting players.
“We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people,” Goodell said. “We the National Football League admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier, and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We the National Football League believe Black lives matter. I personally protest with you, and want to be part of the much-needed change in this country.”
In spite of the four-year hiatus, Kaepernick insists that he is still game-ready. At 32-years old, he still a chance to eke out his best game.
