Cam Newton to Patriots: Here's how Tom Brady reacted to a former MVP joining his former longtime team - CBS Sports

Watch Now: Cam Newton Agrees To A One Year Deal With The Patriots (2:08)

Cam Newton has the opportunity to become the heir apparent to Tom Brady, reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots Sunday after months of (somehow) remaining on the free agent market. Newton will eventually have to compete with Jarrett Stidham for the job, but the incentive-laden deal worth a maximum of $7.5 million demonstrates he's in line for the starting job.

Brady, who won six Super Bowls with the Patriots, reacted to Newton joining his former team on Instagram. It will be the first time a quarterback not named Brady has entered the season as Patriots starter since Drew Bledsoe in 2001 (not taking into account the four games Brady was suspended in 2016, when Jimmy Garoppolo opened the year).

It isn't much, but Brady did point out he and Newton are both endorsed by Under Armour. Newton has been with the Under Armour brand since his rookie season in 2011, when they signed him to the largest deal given to an incoming NFL rookie at the time. Brady signed with Under Armour in 2010, which included a financial stake in the company.

Of the most influential NFL athletes on social media who endorse Under Armour, Brady is tops in the NFL and Newton is fourth. Only Anquan Boldin and Julio Jones are ahead of Newton.

Brady and Newton have faced off only twice in their careers, with Newton winning both meetings. The last time the quarterbacks squared off against each other was 2017, a 33-30 Carolina Panthers' victory when Newton led Carolina on a 10-play, 46-yard drive that resulted in a Graham Gano 48-yard field goal as time expired.

The only way Newton and Brady will face each other this season is in Super Bowl LV (in Tampa of all places). If Newton remains in New England past this season, he'll face Brady in Foxborough in 2021.
