Kemba Walker Injury: Boston Celtics star released from hospital, will return to Boston with team - MassLive.com

DENVER - Boston Celtics star Kemba Walker has been released from a Denver hospital and will be traveling back to Boston with the team.

The Celtics made the announcement just past midnight local time. It’s a very positive development for Walker, who has been initially diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms.

“All the scans that he went through at halftime yielded good results,” Brad Stevens said after the game. “I saw him in the ambulance at halftime that took him to the hospital and he had his wherewithal and was in decent spirits, which was good, obviously.”

Video of the play shows Walker slamming head-first into Semi Ojeleye and falling to the floor. It’s unclear whether he actually lost consciousness, but Stevens said Walker was “out of it” and not himself. He was removed from the floor on a stretcher.

“It hurt and seeing anybody carried off on the stretcher after getting hurt like that, it’s tough,” Marcus Smart said after the game. “We’re just glad he’s OK and it’s not too serious. He’s going to recover. Our prayers are up for him. We hope and wish him get well very soon, but it’s a scary thing to see.”

The Celtics say Walker will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

Considering the severity of the impact, the apparent loss of consciousness, and the early diagnosis of concussion-like symptoms, there is a strong chance Walker will enter the league’s concussion protocol. He would not be able to return until he (a) is without those concussion-like symptoms at rest, (b) is evaluated by a doctor, (c) successfully complete the NBA’s “return-to-participation exertion protocol," and (d) the team doctor and the league discuss the process and decision to allow the player to return. That decision lies with the team doctor.

The return to exertion protocol is a series of increased levels of exertion, from the stationary bike, to running, team drills, agility, and non-contact drills. Each step must be completed without a recurrence of symptoms before the player can advance. Should symptoms return, the player returns to the previous step after he is symptom-free.

There is no timetable for the completion of these steps. Each player progresses at his own pace.
