World Series Has Two Of Baseball's Richest Franchises, Literally

The Boston Red Sox vs Los Angeles Dodgers match up is what many fans were hoping for. Two of the most storied franchises in all of sports. Boston vs Los Angeles is certainly what television executives were hoping for as ratings should be much higher than if two smaller market teams like the Astros and the Brewers were facing off. So everyone should profit from this match-up. The Red Sox and the Dodgers will profit from this series, but will it be enough to finish their 2018 ledger in the red?

The Red Sox $228 plus million dollar payroll is baseball's highest, according to spotrac.com. The Dodgers nearly $200 million dollar payroll ranks third highest. This is why teams, who can afford to, pony up before their best players become free agents. The investments for the Red Sox and the Dodgers have paid off, unlike the San Fransisco Giants whose $205.6 million dollar payroll is the second highest in baseball. The Giants ended up with the fourth worst record in the National league.

History has shown exactly where teams should invest the largest portion of their team's payroll - pitching. The series begins tonight with a great pitching match-up between each team's best pitcher. The Red Sox Chris Sale, who this year makes $12.5 million/year faces off against baseball's highest paid pitcher L.A.'s Clayton Kershaw, who this year earns over $35.5 million/year. Wednesday night will have baseball's second highest paid pitcher - Boston's David Price, who makes $30 million/year vs the Dodgers's Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is a bargain at nearly $8 million this year. Later in the series, Boston's Rick Porcello, at $20 million for this year, will make an appearance as will the Dodgers Rich Hill, who this year earns $16.7 million. And if you are wondering, yes, the Red Sox and the Dodgers each pay their pitching staffs nearly $100 million, which is more than any of the other 28 teams in major league baseball.

As soon as the first pitch is thrown tonight at Fenway Park by Chris Sale at 8:09 EDT, most all of this money talk will be put on the back burner, except when Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound. Eovaldi will probably start game three for the Red Sox. This may be a final audition for all 30 major league teams, because after this season, Eovaldi is a free agent. After undergoing major surgery a few years ago Eovaldi signed a two-year contract which pays him $2 million/year. He, arguably, has been the Red Sox best pitcher in the playoffs. Teams will be lined up to give him a monstrous raise. OK, enough of the money talk. Let the World Series begin.
