Tom Brady, Patriots come out on top vs. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes struggled out of the gate in the huge Sunday Night Football matchup between the Chiefs and Patriots, but fought back to make it a game into the closing seconds. Unfortunately for him, the Chiefs fell short, and are now 5-1 on the season following the 43-40 Patriots victory.

Tom Brady was great for the Patriots, finishing the game with 340 yards and a touchdown, as well as one rushing touchdown. Mahomes finished with 352 yards, four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Mahomes will get some flack for his early struggles, but Sunday evening really was a showdown between two of the top quarterbacks in the game.

Below you can see our updates from the Mahomes-Brady battle as the game happened, in reverse order.

Brady finds Gronk for big gain as Pats kick field goal for win

The Patriots run the ball a couple times, and the Chiefs take a timeout. But they’re in a rough spot, as Brady finds White for 16 yards and then Gronkowski for 39 yards. They center the ball, and then call a timeout with three seconds remaining. Gostkowski connects and the Patriots win!

Mahomes throws 4th TD on 75-yard bomb

Well, if the Patriots started their last drive with the big play, the Chiefs started their next drive with a HUGE play. Mahomes had good protection and found Hill for a 75-yard touchdown to tie the game!

Big play from Brady to Gronk leads to another Patriots field goal

After a quick Chiefs punt, Brady finds Gronkowski for a catch-and-run that goes 42 yards. The Chiefs do manage to force a field goal attempt — and it’s good. So it’s a seven-point lead with 3:15 to go.

Brady scrambles for TD as Patriots regain lead

It didn’t take long for the Patriots to get back into scoring position, as Brady hits White for 9 yards, then Hogan for 24 yards. In Kansas City territory, he hits Hogan again for 19 yards, to the Chiefs’ 5-yard line. After as hot pickup from White, Brady scrambled and ran in his own 4-yard touchdown for another four-point lead.

Huge return sets up third Mahomes TD and Chiefs lead

Brady hit White for 9 yards, and another short one to him after that, but the ensuing drive was primarily made up of rushes. Eventually, they kick a field goal to take a four-point lead. But upon the Gostkowski kickoff, Smith takes it 97 yards to the Chiefs 3-yard line! They lose a yard, then pick up a yard. On third down, Mahomes hits Hill for the short touchdown and a Chiefs lead.

Brady fumble turns into Mahomes TD

Brady missed Gordon and White on deep throws after the Patriots took over, then he was sacked by Ragland. It was a coverage sack, and it resulted in a fumble that was recovered by the Chiefs! Mahomes found Watkins for a 15-yard gain, and then he hit Hill for a pretty 14-yard touchdown. It’s a two-point game, but the Chiefs elect to kick the extra point. Surprising ... Chiefs trail by one.

Mahomes keeper sets up another Chiefs field goal

After the quick Kansas City touchdown, the Patriots took over six minutes off the clock on a drive that saw Brady hit Gordon twice for 20 yards. He tried to find Gordon again in the end zone, but he was well-covered and the Patriots settled for a field goal. The Chiefs took back over, and faced an early fourth down after Mahomes hit Hill for a 9-yard gain. Mahomes kept the ball to pick up a first down on the ground, then at midfield. Mahomes had a short pass afterward, but ultimately they had to settle for another field goal. 27-19 Patriots.

Hunt snags 67-yard TD from Mahomes to start second half

The Chiefs got the ball to start the second half, and they needed just over a minute to get a touchdown. Hunt picked up 8 yards on the ground, then Mahomes went deep to Hunt for a 67-yard touchdown to put the Chiefs right back in the game.

Mahomes picked again before half

Trying to pick up some points before the second half, Mahomes managed to hit Kelce for 10- and 8-yard gains, and also found Hill for 27 and 14 yards. But in the red zone, on a first down, Mahomes tried to throw to Kelce in the end zone, and instead it wound up being his second pick of the night. Patriots lead, 24-9, at halftime.

Brady, Patriots add another TD before halftime

With six minutes to go in the first half, the Patriots took over and began driving. Brady hot White for 17 yards, then Patterson for 13 yards. A 37-yard pass interference penalty on Kansas City (Gordon was the attempted receiver) pushed them to the goal line. Michel eventually runs it in for the New England touchdown. Seven plays, 75 yards on the drive.

Mahomes, Chiefs settle for another field goal

After an iffy start, the Chiefs managed to put together a nice drive after the bad turnover and PAtriots score. Mahomes had passes to Hunt of 6 and 7 yards, and then found Kelce for a big 17-yard gain to take them into the red zone. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get it done from there and had to kick another field goal, making it a 17-9 game.

Brady hits Edelman for perfect TD pass

There was another bad overthrow by Mahomes, and the Chiefs wound up kicking another field goal to make it a 10-6 game. When the Patriots took over, they started driving. Brady hit Gronkowski for 16 yards, and then Edelman for 14 yards as the first quarter came to an end. He found Edelman again for a 17-yard touchdown, and it was a beauty:

Oof, Mahomes throws bad INT

After the Patriots tied it at 3-3, Mahomes’ first pass of the Kansas City drive went right to Hightower for an interception. He returned it all the way to the 4-yard line, and the Patriots quickly scored to make it a 10-3 game.

Mahomems with two bad overthrows early, Patriots running

Mahomes had Kareem Hunt for a for-sure touchdown, as the running back had his man beat big time, but Mahomes overthrew the ball slightly, so it fell incomplete. He did, however, find Kelce for gains of 17 and 9 yards on the drive. On third down, just outside the red zone, Mahomes overthrows Tyreek Hill, again just barely. Those were both touchdowns, but fell incomplete instead! So close!

On the ensuing drive, Brady only threw three passes, two of which went to Hogan for 17 yards. The rest was all the running game, and it allowed the Patriots to tie the game at 3-3.

Patriots have turnover on downs to start

Brady started the game with a pass to Gordon for 12 yards, and then targeted him again on a deep pass attempt that fell incomplete. Brady also threw incomplete to Gronkowski, and then again to Gordon on fourth down, giving the Chiefs the ball at their own 40-yard line.
