Follow the most miserable moments of 49ers-Packers on 'Monday Night Football'

What was expected to be a very ugly and miserable Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers turned out to be ... well, still ugly, but also entertaining. Most of the ugliness came on defense, with both teams blowing coverage, allowing for big gains through the air from Aaron Rodgers and C.J. Beathard. In the end, it was a 33-30 Packers win.

Green Bay is now 3-2-1 on the season, while the 49ers drop to 1-5 on the year. Beathard wound up having a good game for the 49ers, completing 16 of 23 passes for 245 yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception. The 49ers also managed to rush for 174 yards.

But the ugliest aspect of Monday’s game was San Francisco’s passing defense. Just about every defensive back allowed a big play or took a bad penalty, and it cost the 49ers as Rodgers marched the Packers down the field for a game-winning field goal.

Rodgers finished with 425 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 25 completed passes, and contributed 34 of his team’s 116 rushing yards on the night.

Rodgers shreds 49ers defense after brutal penalty, Packers win, 33-30

The Packers are stopped, and it looks like overtime ... until an illegal contact penalty on Richard Sherman gives them a first down. Then Rogers picks up 21 yards on the ground, and then hits Adams for 8 yards. The 49ers defense is completely gassed after the penalty. Rodgers hits St. Brown for a 19-yard gain. With 10 seconds to go, Rodgers hits Adams for 19 yards. With three second on the clock, Crosby kicks a 27-yard game-winner.

49ers defense crumbles again, Beathard throws pick

The 49ers, with a chance to kill the rest of the clock and win the game, came up short and had to punt after their second consecutive 3-and-out. So the Packers get the ball back at their own 42-yard line with three minutes to go. On first down, Rdgers hits Adams for a 38-yard gain. The 49ers tried to cover him with Reuben Foster — a good linebacker, but not someone who should be in man coverage on a receiver like Adams. And then Rodgers, of course, hits Adams again for a touchdown to tie it up.

And then the 49ers, upon getting the ball back, throw an interception on third down ... The Packers will have a minute to try and prevent overtime.

Packers fail to capitalize on great field position

After the fourth-down stop, the 49ers were unable to pick up a first down, so they punted and the Packers had good field position. Unfortunately for Green Bay, they also could not pick up a first down, with a pass to Adams losing 3 yards and a sack of Rodgers by Ronald Blair. Not a great look for the Packers offense ...

Richard Sherman stiff-armed out of crucial tackle, but Packers have turnover on downs

More bad tackling and coverage by the 49ers defense has the Packers marching down the field. Valdes-Scantling catches one for 13 yards, Graham for 21 yards. Also, have you ever seen Richard Sherman eat a stiff arm like this? Yikes. The Packers also ended up getting all the way to the 4-yard line, but Rodgers throws incomplete on fourth down, so the 49ers take over.

49ers take TD lead after another field goal

The 49ers just ran the ball down Green Bay’s throat going into the fourth quarter, with Mostert picking up gains of 10 and 17 yards. They eventually had to settle for a field goal, but it put them on top, 30-23, a touchdown lead.

Pierre Garcon sure looked good on this play, didn’t he? What a miss! 49ers eventually kicked a 44-yard field goal for a 27-23 lead.

Rodgers makes 49ers look bad again

The Packers received the second-half kickoff, and immediately began marching down the field. The biggest was an amazing play by Rodgers that saw him hit Valdes-Scantling for a 30-yard pickup. That allowed Mason Crosby to kick a 51-yard field goal.

First half ends: Bad defense, good offense for both teams

Packers have a penalty that negates their first-down play, then Rodgers is sacked and throws incomplete. They punt, and the 49ers begin driving again. Raheem Mostert picks up 5 and then 9 yards, and Beathard scrambles for an 11-yard run on 3rd-and-9. But they face another 3rd-and-long, and this time they just run the ball so they can kick the field goal before the end of the half. Beathard took an ugly sack for a loss of 6 yards prior to the third down. The 46-yard field goal is good, and the 49ers take a 24-20 lead into the half.

Goodwin catches second TD as 49ers take lead

After the Green Bay field goal, Beathard found Kittle for 9 yards, then Mostert broke some tackles to rumble for 26 yards. Then, Beathard found Goodwin again, this time for a 30-yard touchdown! This one was just a great route run by Goodwin more than bad football.

GIVE ME MORE 49ERS FUMBLES THEY WILL NEVER STOP EMBRACE IT

The Packers picked up a couple first downs, but ultimately had to punt when the 49ers held just inside of their own territory. On the ensuing 49ers offensive drive, Juszczyk catches a pass for 21 yards ... and fumbles again. That’s the 15th fumble of the season for the 49ers.

After the Packers take over, they lose 6 yards on a run, then have a false start, and then have a fumble, though the referees save them by saying the forward progress was stopped. The Packers elect to go for it on fourth down, and Rodgers easily runs the 4 yards for the first. Fortunately for the 49ers, they manage to hold them to a field goal, so it’s still a one-score game. Packers lead, 20-14.

Beathard bomb to Goodwin on more busted coverage, this time from the Packers

After the 49ers got the ball back, a few good runs from Breida set up another breakdown in coverage and a 67-yard touchdown for Marquise Goodwin. Sometimes, bad football helps good football happen! 17-14 Packers.

Rodgers hits Graham for 54 yards in blown coverage

After a 49ers drive stalls and ends in a punt, the Packers wasted no time getting right back into scoring position. The 49ers’ defense was just as bad as advertised, allowing a 54-yard reception to Jimmy Graham before Davante Adams caught a 9-yard touchdown pass.

49ers fumble for the 900th time this season

If you like ugly football, you’re in the right place! Reed fumbled the kickoff for the 49ers, and it was recovered by the Packers. They then had a pass of 22 yards, though the 49ers defense managed to hold them to a field goal. This game is flying. 10-7 Packers.

Bad defense already a trend for this game!

Well, things started off well for the 49ers. But the Packers needed just two plays to get to the 49ers’ 1-yard line. Welp.

Packers would go on to score, a quick pass to Ty Montgomery. 7-7.

Packers defense non-existent on opening drive

C.J. Beathard finds Marquise Goodwin for 17 yards, then Kyle Juszczyk for 9 yards, and Kendrick Bourne for 22 yards. Really ugly play from the Packers secondary early on, and then Matt Breida, who is injured, rushed for a 3-yard touchdown and the 49ers are on top right away, 7-0.

The Packers might yet be a good team, but they have also struggled plenty to start the season. Five games in, and it’s already been a long season for the Green Bay Packers, who currently sit at 2-2-1 on the season. For the San Francisco 49ers, it’s been even longer. The Packers will play host to the 49ers on Monday Night Football for Week 6, beginning at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN (live streaming via ).

The 49ers have had to deal with losing their starting quarterback and starting running back in Jimmy Garoppolo and Jerick McKinnon, for the entirety of the 2018 season. They’ve also dealt with several more injuries, and while the Packers certainly aren’t the healthiest teams in the league, they have plenty more starters with which to face San Francisco.

• While the biggest injuries are to the 49ers, the Packers are ailing too. It’s likely that both Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison will be inactive for Monday’s game.
• And there is some good news for the 49ers on that front — the team was expected to make a roster move to promote a running back this week given the injuries to Matt Breida, but instead they promoted tight end Ross Dwelley, meaning Breida should play.
• On the 49ers’ official injury report, Dante Pettis is listed out, while Trent Taylor is listed as doubtful. Both are receivers, while another receiver, Pierre Garcon, is questionable. All of tight end George Kittle, cornerback K’Waun Williams, and offensive linemen Mike Person, Weston Richburg, and Joe Staley are also questionable.
• In addition to Cobb and Allison, the Packers listed safety Jermaine Whitehead, cornerbacks Bashaud Breeland and Jaire Alexander, and offensive linemen Justin McCray, Jason Spriggs and Bryan Bulaga as questionable.
• The 49ers are no strangers to Monday Night Football, having not lost there since 2010.
