Bills rookie QB Josh Allen exits with injury, Nathan Peterman throws crushing pick-six

Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen took plenty of hits on Sunday, and eventually left the game grimacing from an injured elbow.

That meant Nathan Peterman came in, and he once again threw some soul-crushing interceptions that led to the Bills’ 20-13 loss.

Allen went out late in the third quarter. He seemed to hurt himself when he was hit by Houston Texans defenders Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney from each side. It looked like Mercilus’ helmet hit Allen in the right throwing elbow.

Allen stayed in, threw incomplete on the next play and was in obvious pain. He went down, trainers came out, and he exited the game.

Peterman came in and early in the fourth quarter gave the Bills a lead on a touchdown pass to Zay Jones. But his awful pick-six in the final two minutes let the Texans off the hook.

Nathan Peterman throws two brutal interceptions

After the Bills defense held at the goal line in the final two minutes — the Texans’ play-calling near the goal line has been impossibly bad this season — Houston settled for a field goal and the game was tied. Peterman had a chance to go win the game. But he won it for the Texans.

Peterman looked left, cornerback Johnathan Joseph broke on the pass and had an easy pick-six to give the Texans the lead. Then with the Bills down a touchdown, Peterman threw another interception to Kareem Jackson to seal the loss.

Peterman threw 12 passes and two were picked off. Before Sunday, he had seven interceptions on 67 career passes.

Josh Allen pulled after elbow injury

When Allen had to come out, Bills coach Sean McDermott was yelling at the officials as he came out to check on Allen. He might’ve been upset that Mercilus’ hit to Allen was after he released a pass to Kelvin Benjamin.

Allen was on the sideline and tried to throw, but apparently was still in pain. When trainers touched his right elbow he was in obvious pain, and Peterman stayed in the game.

Bills don’t want to risk Allen’s health

Allen has taken some punishment behind a mediocre Bills line, and that’s not what the Bills want to see. Allen was the eighth overall pick of the draft and Buffalo didn’t want to put him in right away, but Peterman failed miserably and the Bills made the move after the season opener.

It didn’t seem like Allen’s injury was too serious, because he stayed on the sideline and was encouraging his teammates. But the Bills don’t want to risk a more serious injury to their young franchise quarterback.

However, that care meant Peterman had to play, and that ended up costing the Bills a shot at a win.
