October brought the first truly wild week to college football, resulting in considerable shuffling in the Amway Coaches Poll.
The top four teams remained the same, with No. 1 Alabama continuing to receive 61 of 64 first-place votes after the Crimson Tide cruised past Arkansas. Georgia retained the No. 2 spot after taking down Vanderbilt. No. 3 Ohio State overcame a sluggish start to put away Indiana and retained one No. 1 vote. Fourth-ranked Clemson, retaining two No. 1 nods, also held steady after its most lopsided result of the season at Wake Forest.
That’s where the stability ends. Notre Dame climbed into the top five after its prime-time victory at Virginia Tech kept its record unblemished. No. 6 West Virginia assumes the mantle of the highest-ranked Big 12 squad. No. 7 Washington and No. 8 Penn State now enjoy the distinction of being the highest-rated one-loss teams.
Stock up: Texas. The Longhorns were rewarded for their thrilling win against Red River rival Oklahoma with a six-place jump in the rankings to No. 14. They match No. 19 N.C. State for the biggest rise within the top 25.
Stock down: Oklahoma. The Sooners dipped six spots to No. 11, though they’re still very much in the Big 12 hunt.
TOP 25: Amway Coaches Poll
Stock up: Central Florida. The Knights just keep winning, and the voters are taking notice. UCF cracks the top 10 with a four-spot gain to No. 9. They’re no longer the lone AAC representative in the poll, however, as South Florida and Cincinnati enter the rankings this week.
Stock down: LSU. The Tigers’ dream start hit a snag at Florida, and they tumble six places to No. 12 as a result.
Stock up: Colorado. The Buffs survived a challenge from Arizona State to stay undefeated, and they gained four spots to check in at No. 18.
Stock down: Auburn. The SEC’s other Tigers lost for the second time this season at Mississippi State and take the biggest drop in the poll of 12 places to No. 21.
New kids on the block: No. 16 Florida, No. 22 Texas A&M, No. 23 South Florida, No. 25 Cincinnati.
College dropouts: Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Boise State.
