Former NFL player Greg Hardy to make pro MMA debut on UFC TV series

Controversial former NFL player Greg Hardy will make his debut as a pro MMA fighter June 12 in Las Vegas.

MMA Today reports Hardy will fight Brandon Sayles (5-1) in the first episode of the UFC's upcoming season of "Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series."

It's the latest step in Hardy's post-NFL career. The pass rusher set a Panthers team record with 15 sacks in 2013 and made second-team All-Pro. But he played only one game in the 2014 season before being placed on the commissioner's exempt list after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Although charges in that case were eventually dropped, Hardy hasn't played in the NFL since the 2015 season. Hardy pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge in 2016.

UFC president White said in 2016 he'd be open to giving Hardy a shot in the octagon.

“I’m not saying he should be welcomed here," White said (via MMA-Today). "I’m saying, I’m a guy who believes that if you make a mistake, your life isn’t over forever. When you make mistakes, it’s about how you act from there on out.”

The 6-5, 280-pound Hardy has won all three of his amateur MMA fights by knockout, needing a total of just 142 seconds in the three fights to secure the wins.
