I don’t know what will happen with Deshaun Watson, but I am from the Schefter school on this: The Eagles are likely to be in play when Houston trades him, assuming Houston does sometime before draft day 2022. 4) For what it’s worth, the sense other teams got over the summer break is that the Texans weren’t in a rush to move Watson. Add it up and the remedy would seem to be someone swooping in and offering the moon for Watson, even with the ongoing legal situation. I’ve got four teams marked down as ones to watch—Carolina, Denver, Miami and Philadelphia—and I believe all four are monitoring all this. The Dolphins have three first-rounders the next two years, and the Eagles will likely have three next year alone (so long as Carson Wentz stays healthy in Indy), and Carolina and Denver have interesting young players they could throw into trades. But again, the question is whether you’d fork over an historic haul, given the uncertainty here. And, of course, it probably wouldn’t make sense for Caserio to trade the best quarterback in team history, locked up contractually and in his mid-20s, without getting that kind of return.

Prior to the Eagles signing Nelson, it was very much unclear who was going to start at cornerback across from Slay. I mean, the team had 2020 undrafted rookie free agent signing Michael Jacquet III running with the first team defense back in OTAs. Avonte Maddox, Craig James, and Zech McPhearson were also thought to be in the mix. Now we know that it’ll be Nelson and Slay starting at cornerback for the Eagles, with Maddox a strong contender for the nickel corner role. With Rodney McLeod (assuming he’s healthy) and Anthony Harris playing safety behind them, the Eagles suddenly have a solid-looking secondary. On paper, at least.

This isn’t a long term solution, but it should be a big improvement over last year’s CBs. Nelson is a proven outside CB. Maddox played there last year, but wasn’t a good fit. Maddox should be an improvement over Nickell Robey-Coleman in the slot. McPhearson is a talented rookie and the coaches are high on him. This takes pressure off having to play him and allows him to develop naturally. McPhearson might be good from Day One, but it won’t hurt if he struggles as a rookie. One of the benefits of this is that the Eagles can try to figure some long term plans. They can see if Nelson is worth bringing back on a longer deal. They will have a feel for McPhearson and whether he should play inside or outside. They’ll also hopefully have a feel for whether he’s capable of starting in 2022 or needs more time. It would be great if Maddox could stay healthy and thrive in the slot. He’s been moved around and had some bad luck. Maddox is due for a season when things go his way.

Nelson’s arrival doesn’t mean that he’s a plug-and-play starter in this defense. Gannon plans on giving his defensive players a fresh look as he eyes them in pads for the first time when Training Camp begins. The Eagles have had only a handful of weeks to work with players – no pads, no contact, no lining up against another player – through the spring, so Gannon is bringing an open-minded approach to his summer evaluation. With the start of Training Camp next week – the players report to the NovaCare Complex on Tuesday and hit the practice field for the first time in camp on Wednesday (our live practice coverage begins at 10 AM followed by Coach Sirianni’s press conference around noon) – the addition of Nelson provides a nice boost to the locker room and the defense. The roster, of course, remains a work in progress but bringing Nelson on board addresses a glaring question mark for the defense.

That said, let’s not oversell the addition. Nelson was highly thought of in Pittsburgh and there’s a notion he would have been re-signed if the Steelers weren’t so cap-strapped. But 30 other teams also had a chance to sign Nelson and yet he remained on the open market for four months. Just because he’s an upgrade on paper doesn’t mean he’ll be a difference-maker. I actually think the move is more important in averting another disaster of depth than it is in raising the quality of the starting defense. Slay has stayed healthy throughout most of his career, but he’s also 30. Now, any prolonged absence to him is at least mitigated a bit by the presence of Nelson.

Is there a way to fast-forward to 2022? Unfortunately for the Eagles, there is not. This will be a rebuilding year in the most painful way, with the team carrying a hit of nearly $34 million in dead money on the cap following the trade of Carson Wentz. Will they be better off for it in future seasons? Theoretically, yes. But that assumes they are wise with their draft picks and contracts, and that you should have faith in GM Howie Roseman.

While the loss of Dak Prescott and nearly the entire offensive line last year would have doomed the team in any case, the way the defense repeatedly let the club down was nearly as big a reason for the dismal record despite being in the weakest division in the NFL. This may not be a top 10 unit yet, but if this offense is anything like what we believe it to be, just getting somewhere in middle of the pack on defense will be enough to win some extra games. It even will help protect Prescott, since it should keep him out of many situations where he thinks he has to put on his hero cape to try and pull things out. Going into the offseason, fixing the defense was stated as a top priority. Based on what we have seen so far, those were not empty words.

Who will emerge as WR3 and WR4? The top two wide receivers on this team will be Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. The pecking order after that will be determined in the following weeks. Make no mistake - the third and fourth receives in this offense will be very important to the success of this football team. The house money for next on the pecking order is on the rookie speedster from North Carolina, Dyami Brown. Some think Adam Humphries can be that guy from the slot. There is another camp who feels Cam Sims will keep building on his solid 2020 season, and lock in a bigger role in this offense. There are even a few who believe Kelvin Harmon will return from injury and have a monster season in that bigger-bodied wideout role the team is lacking. Here is where most of us can agree - the meter is VERY low on second year receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden and the diminutive Steven Sims Jr. The battle for snaps after McLaurin and Samuel will be an intriguing one this camp.
