Arguably Jim Harbaugh's biggest critic nationally throughout his tenure at Michigan, ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum didn't hold back in his assessment of the sixth-year coach's future during Sunday's appearance on SportsCenter. In the aftermath of Michigan's shocking upset loss to Michigan State, Harbaugh is being ripped across the media spectrum as being overrated and overpaid.
"This is not breaking news," Finebaum said. "This is who Jim Harbaugh is. He gets paid $8 million a year. We all act like he's Nick Saban, and he's not. He is a very average, maybe slightly better than average college football coach. Anyone who claims that he is an elite coach in college football is being fraudulent. That's just not true at all.
"I think this is what Michigan wants. They keep supporting him. They keep endorsing him, embracing him even though he can't beat Ohio State. He's struggling to beat his in-state rival. This is what Michigan deserves."
Harbaugh didn't say his team overlooked Michigan State and gave credit to first-year coach Mel Tucker and staff for their gameplan. But in the end, it was another frustrating conclusion Harbaugh knows all too well in Ann Arbor — failing at home to a rival.
He is now 1-6 at home vs. Michigan State and Ohio State during his tenure.
"I thought they were really good," Harbaugh said. "They darn-near won last week, and they turned the ball over seven times, and it’s nearly impossible to win a game doing that. And today no turnovers, they didn’t turn the ball over and we didn’t turn the ball over, but they found a way to win."
Harbaugh's contract expires after next season and as of now, there's no agreement in place to renew. His buyout is one of the nation's smallest among major coaches.
