It didn't take long for Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons on Saturday night to mention Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields on Twitter after the signal caller knifed his way through the Nittany Lions' defense for two first-half touchdown passes during the Buckeyes' 38-25 victory. Parsons, an All-American last fall who opted out this season in August, was impressed by Fields' exploits as a playmaker and said as much on Twitter.
"Justin fields ... that’s the tweet," Parsons tweeted after the Heisman frontrunner pushed Ohio State's lead to double digits with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Ruckert just before intermission.
Later, Parsons wrote, "I really think Justin Fields is the best quarterback in America" and mentioned his decision to opt-out after numerous comments on both tweets centered around his decision to not play this season.
"It’s really not about me opting or not! One player don’t change a team! I want nothing but the best for Penn state! Penn state is like a second home to me and always will be!"
Fields, once a Penn State commit, finished 28-of-34 passing with 318 yards and four touchdowns as the third-ranked Buckeyes handled what most expect will be their toughest game of the regular season.
“I just think we worked hard in the off-season,” Fields said of the passing game success. “We had a lot of time to work with Coach Day and individually. Me and the receivers have worked hard in practice and that’s why we’re having success right now. We knew this was a big game coming in.
"But as Coach Day says, we take it one week at a time. We will come back and focus on playing Rutgers next week. But we are definitely happy to get this win.”
Garrett Wilson had 11 catches for 111 yards for the Buckeyes and managed a 62-yard run on the Buckeyes’ first play from scrimmage that set the tone for the game. Ruckert scored twice, ending an impressive night with a fourth-down touchdown reception in the fourth quarter that put it away.
“Of course, those guys are talented and they make my job easier with the way they perform on the field,” Fields said. “I’m glad they’re on my team and I got the chance to throw those guys the ball.”
